Comic books a brief history
While it is difficult for todays comic-book fans to believe, over forty years ago it was extremely hard to find comic books for sale. There were no comic stores, and the number of newsagents and shops carrying comic books was constantly dwindling. Few stores could waste their shelf space of comic books.
The only comic books you could find on a reasonably dependable basis were those in the archie line. A lot of newsagents and shops continued to carry those because parents bought them for their children.
The hardest comic books to find were marvel comics – even charlton comics were carried more widely than marvels. Marvel was a minor company. Almost all of the stories were written by the editor Stan Lee, and almost all were drawn by one of a handful of staff artists, including Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Don Heck, and Gene Colan. Occasionally, Al Williamson would draw a western story or Jack Davis would illustrate a fantasy story.
Marvel comics were seldom found in “mint” condition, even in the newsagents. The presses did such a shoddy job of trimming the copies that there were shredding along the edges and frequently there were tiny pieces missing along the edges of at least some of the pages and particularly on the covers. Collectors today call these defects “Marvel chipping” or “Marvel cips”.
My love of comic books has been since i was young boy at primary school and i’m hoping to share my knowledge on this website
